Relocating? Items to Keep Off the Moving Truck | Counselor Realty

When preparing to move into one of the many inviting homes for sale in Coon Rapids, you might be tempted to load as many items as possible onto the moving truck to reduce the number of boxes you need to transport yourself. However, there are a few essential items you should keep with you rather than placing them on the truck.

  • Anything in Your Safe
If you have an in-home safe, empty it before it's loaded onto the moving truck. Should something happen to the safe during the move, you don't want to risk losing all the items inside it.

  • Family Heirlooms and Prized Possessions
Every family has items that hold a lot of sentimental value. This list frequently includes favorite toys, photographs, artwork, jewelry, scrapbooks, and other mementos. While insurance will cover any items that go missing or get damaged during the move, some things simply can't be replaced.

  • Pricey Electronics and Art Work
You don't want expensive pieces of art or electronics to sit in a moving truck for hours. Any fluctuations in temperature or humidity can potentially damage these costly, expensive items.

Instead, carefully wrap these items with the appropriate protective materials (like bubble wrap or picture boxes) and transport these items in your personal vehicle.

  • Houseplants
Despite the best efforts of movers, it's nearly impossible to ensure that moving vehicles maintain a climate-controlled environment at all times. Even well-packed boxes may be dropped or knocked into other items. For this reason, when relocating to one of the homes for sale in Detroit Lakes, it's wise to keep your plants with you rather than on the moving truck to ensure they arrive in the best condition.

If you're moving out-of-state or more than 150 miles, it may be illegal to transport your houseplants without a permit. Should you find yourself in this situation, consider gifting your plants to a local friend or neighbor.

  • Cleaning Supplies and Household Essentials
It's wise to keep a tote with basic cleaning supplies (like glass cleaner, bathroom cleaner, dusting supplies, microfiber rags, a broom, and a mop) and household items (think toilet paper, paper towels, disposable plates, and cutlery) on hand.

This will make your move a little bit more comfortable and keep you from having to run out to the store for items to get settled in your new home. You'll likely want to do a little dusting and sanitizing as you unpack and set up your new space.

Some cleaning products are flammable and may not be allowed on a moving truck. You also run the risk of bottles being damaged and potentially spilling their contents on your other belongings.

  • Personal Toiletries and Prescriptions
Any items that you use daily, like cosmetics, shower supplies, hygienic items, and medication, shouldn't go on a moving truck. Even if you plan to unpack everything the same day of your move, you don't want to find yourself shuffling through boxes at midnight to find your contacts or skincare items.

The integrity of some products can be compromised if they are exposed to excessive heat; vehicle interiors can reach temperatures of 120 degrees Fahrenheit within hours.

Knowing what items to keep off the moving truck will ensure you have all your important items and essentials nearby throughout the moving process. Ready to find your next home? Call today
