There might be a chill in the air and some snow on the ground, but that doesn't have to keep you inside all winter. In fact, the Twin Cities area is home to some really enjoyable outdoor winter events. If you've been busy looking at Minneapolis homes for sale and Saint Paul homes for sale, perhaps it's time to take a break and enjoy some winter fun. Here are four upcoming events we recommend checking out.
- Lake Harriet Winter Kite Festival: Lake Harriet, Minneapolis, MN 55409
The Lake Harriet Winter Kite Festival is a winter tradition held alongside beautiful Lake Harriet. This year, it's scheduled for January 28 between noon and 4 p.m. Bundle up in your outdoor gear and head out to see some truly incredible kites. In the past, participants have flown everything from colorful fish flags to rainbow eagles.
Parking for the kite festival will be available at the Calhoun Executive Center. There will be a free bus taking people to and from the event between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. This is an all-ages event, and dogs are welcome if they're leashed. Sponsors include the East Harriet Farmstead Neighborhood Association and Linden Hills Neighborhood Council.
- Powderhorn Art Sled Rally: East 31st Street and Cedar Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55409
Do you want to build your own sled and see how it performs? Maybe you want to watch others try out their own homemade sleds on one of the area's best hills. You can do either of those things or both at the Powderhorn Art Sled Rally on January 28.
Held in Powderhorn Park, this annual event will kick off at 2 p.m. The sledding area will be lined with straw bales for safety. Some of the sleds get really creative. In years past, people have created their own gingerbread house sleds, Zamboni sleds, and motorcycle sleds.
- Art Shanty Projects: Lake Harriet, Minneapolis, MN 55409
Art Shanty Projects is a fun, four-weekend event during which artists create their own artistic buildings and shanties on the shores of Lake Harriet. Visitors can ride decorated bicycles through the festival, admiring the unique creations. Artists have created structures that look like boom boxes, chapsticks, and even mystical unicorn kingdoms.
This event will reoccur every Saturday and Sunday between January 21 and February 12, 2023. Each day, the shanty village will be open from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. There will be ASL interpreters and audio describers on-site between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
- Saint Paul Winter Carnival: Downtown Saint Paul, MN 55101
The Saint Paul Winter Carnival is a whole collection of free, public events taking place throughout downtown Saint Paul and at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. One favorite is Vulcan Snow Park, a collection of snow sculptures that will be in place between January 27 and February 5 at the fairgrounds. You can also stop by Kids and Family Day at the Landmark Center on February 4 for live entertainment and tasty eats.
Another Winter Carnival favorite is the Fire & Ice Run. Dress up in your favorite winter gear or costume and run a 5k, 10k, 15k, or 20k through Vulcan Snow Park and the fairgrounds. Walkers and runners of all abilities are welcome. All participants get a long-sleeve t-shirt.
