Fly Fishing Destinations - Twin Cities - Counselor Realty

With its abundance of lakes, river, and streams that have many different types of game fish, the Twin Cities has plenty of spots that are perfect for fly fishing. Whether you prefer walking a stream, wading in a river, or casting from a boat, pier, or the shore, you'll be able to do it at several area locations.

Try the following five fly fishing destinations around the Twin Cities and located near Minneapolis homes for sale or St. Paul homes for sale.

  1. Lake Calhoun – about 3 blocks west of Lake St. and Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis
Lake Calhoun is a prime spot to fish for bluegill, crappie, tiger muskie, Northern pike, largemouth bass, walleye, yellow perch, bullhead, and carp. The pier lets you cast into deep water, so you don't necessarily need a boat to reel in a big one. Recommended flies include the wooly bugger, bass popper, small nymphs, and minnow patterns. And as an added bonus, you'll be able to enjoy beautiful views of the Minneapolis skyline from the lake.

  2. Medicine Lake – north of Hwy. 55, west of Hwy. 169, Plymouth
The second-largest lake in the Twin Cities, Medicine Lake is located near Plymouth homes for sale. You'll find a wide variety of fish in the lake, including largemouth bass, bluegill, perch, crappie, northern pike, and green sunfish. Recommended fly fishing bait includes bass and panfish poppers and small nymphs. And when you're done finishing for the day, relax on the swimming beach.

  3. Stoney Brook – County Road 78, Brainerd
You'll find Stoney Brook – a stream that's home to large brook trout that can weigh more than 5 pounds – located close to Brainerd homes for sale. If you haven't fished the steam in a while, you'll find that the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has put a lot of effort into improving the habitat and protecting the brook trout, so quality trout have been maintained while their average size has increased greatly. The shaded stream has lots of brush and overhanging trees along its edge, so you may need to wade into the water to cast properly without your fly getting caught.

  4. Snelling Lake – Fort Snelling State Park, 101 Snelling Lake Rd., Bloomington, MN 55111
Located within the popular Fort Snelling State Park, Snelling Lake is 101 acres and close to Bloomington homes for sale. It has an abundance of bluegill, largemouth bass, and Northern pike, which are larger than those found in similar lakes. Recommended flies include small nymphs, foam flies, and bass poppers. If you prefer fishing on the shore, head for the pier on the north end of the lake.

  5. Lake Phalen – 1600 Phalen Dr., Saint Paul, MN 55106
One of Saint Paul's largest lakes, Lake Phalen is home to plenty of bluegill that can be caught using smaller nymphs and foam flies. You'll also find Northern pike and yellow perch at the lake. Try fishing off the pier or wading into the water, since fishing from shore may be limited by vegetation in some seasons.

The natural beauty of the Twin Cities area is part of what makes it a terrific place to live. To find out more, call today.
