What can be more relaxing than snoozing in your own backyard in a hammock? As you peruse some of the incredible outdoor spaces that complement our Coon Rapid homes for sale and our Detroit Lakes homes for sale, imagine yourself stretched out there in a comfortable new hammock. Or perhaps you enjoy camping and would like to use a hammock instead of a camp chair. With so many options, you're bound to find one that suits you perfectly.
- Rope or fabric?
Generally speaking, hammocks are generally made from loosely woven ropes for hot climates and fabric for cooler locations. But while the Detroit Lakes area is much cooler than most southern climes, summers may still be warm enough for an attractive rope hammock, if you prefer. Just keep in mind that as the weather cools down, you might wake up from your nap a little stiff. A cozy comforter may be necessary to keep you warm enough. Rope choices include cotton and polyester. Cotton is the most comfortable choice since the fibers stretch with your movements. Polyester is more durable, standing up to the tests of heat and moisture. Another modern option in fabric models is quilting. With soft fiber between two layers of fabric, quilted hammocks offer additional warmth, as well as comfort.
- Spreader bars or not?
Located at the head and foot of the hammock, these bars prevent the hammock from curling around you when you lie down. Hammocks without bars allow you to hang the swing at the height you wish as well as the distance between attachment points. They can also trap small children making it difficult for them to get out. Hammocks made with spreader bars can often accommodate more weight and a broader surface area, so that their comfort can be shared with more than one person. Your family dynamic and the guests you expect to entertain should help drive your decision between bars or no bars.
- Chairs or swings?
Simply put, do you want to lie down and relax or do you prefer to sit? In addition to traditional hammocks, they are also available as chairs. Generally weighing about a pound, hammock chairs are easy to pack for camping trips and offer the advantage of keeping your feet off the ground, avoiding crawling pests. If you enjoy sleeping under the stars, a traditional hammock is far more comfortable than the hard ground. Of course, they both offer the same comfort in the back yard that they do in the woods.
- No trees for hanging?
Trees spaced perfectly far apart that also have the strength to hold the necessary weight are not always available. Fortunately, you can purchase hammock stands for either style. You can find them in both wood and metal. Wooden stands are generally more attractive and offer greater stability than metal, but are less convenient when the hammock will be moved to multiple locations. Metal stands are lighter and easier to transport, often coated with rust-resistant powder coats.
- Are they expensive?
Hammocks are available in so many styles that you can pretty much pick your price. A simple camping hammock made of nylon will cost between fifteen and thirty dollars. A stylish two-person durable cotton fabric hammock with a sturdy wooden frame and removable cushions can cost about $1,300. A heavy-duty steel frame will cost about $120. A wooden frame when purchased separately will cost between $150 and $350.
