You Still Need to Do These 8 Things if You Hire Movers
Have you decided that it's time to move? You may have been looking at some beautiful Glenwood homes for sale or perhaps the Maple Grove homes for sale and are getting ready to take the leap into a new place. Looking around at your current home, you may decide to hire movers to help. Before you do, there are a few important steps you need to take.
- Purge
Now is the time to get rid of all of the things you might have a use for someday but can't remember what that is. Organize into toss, donate, sell, and keep. Movers can't make these personal decisions for you. If you don't do it, you'll find yourself taking that collection of fast food cups to your new place. - Gather packing supplies
Unless you'll pay the movers to pack everything, you will need to buy boxes, tape, markers, and cushioning materials for fragile items. There are a number of specialty boxes available that could save you a lot of energy available at most storage facilities. Glassware boxes with dividers will help protect your fragile items. Wardrobe boxes allow you to pack your clothing by simply moving hanging clothes from the closet to the box, and you can put shoes, belts, and accessories in the bottom of the box. Mirror boxes are reinforced to protect mirrors, paintings, and prints. - Label all boxes clearly and carefully
Be sure to mark instructions to movers such as "FRAGILE" or "LAST LOAD" as appropriate. Mark room identifications as well. This helps the movers keep your belongings organized for easier unpacking. Boxes should be labeled on all four sides. That can be a lot of writing. To make it easier to identify the contents, consider labeling them alphabetically. Keep a clipboard handy and note the general contents of each. That way, you know which box to find and unpack for any specific need. - Prepare a first-day box
One box should be dedicated to all of those items you need on the first day you are in your home. It should contain a glass for each person, toiletries, bedding, and a first aid kit. Be sure you label it as the last box to be loaded so that it is one of the first to come out at your new home. - Pack important documents
In a dedicated container, set aside important paperwork such as birth certificates, mortgage documents, shot records, and passports. This should not be in a box for the movers but kept with the homeowner. This should also contain the lists you made of box contents. - Plan for children and pets
Moving can be frightening and confusing for both, creating a dangerous situation. Pets can dart out of an open door, and children can get underfoot. Keep them both safe by crating animals and giving children a safe space. Visiting a neighbor or family member may give them some special time together before moving. - Prepare appliances
If they are to remain in the house, clean them thoroughly. If the power will be turned off, unplug the refrigerator and prop the door open slightly. If they are to be moved, disconnect them before the movers arrive. Tape doors closed. If you have any gas appliances, this should be done by the gas company. - Verify moving arrangements
After you have arranged the move with the company you have hired, and before your moving date, verify the schedule and make sure you each have valid contact information.
