Caribou Coffee may be the workhorse coffee franchise for most of Minnesota, but when you are staving off winter chills during house-hunting expeditions, you may want something more than a cuppa Lakeshore Blend. In a hot market like Bloomington, you cannot afford to stay indoors looking for Bloomington homes for sale — you have to get out and look! Herewith, seven of our favorite spots to jazz up your java and get jiving with jitter juice.
- Ambrosia Coffee and Cafe, at 7373 France Avenue South in Edina, not only has some of the finest coffees and teas around, it serves up sandwiches, pastries, and pleasure with every sip. If your doctor okays it, try the "Ultimate Grilled Cheese" sandwich, built from four kinds of cheese (Provolone, Pepper Jack, Swiss, and Cheddar) and then overdone on a ciabatta bun with cream cheese melted with tomatoes — lotsa fun! It pairs well with a white mocha espresso.
- Coffee + Tea Limited at the Mall of America, 2000 Northeast Court in Bloomington, has been in this same spot since 1992 and has no plans to move. This is the real deal — aromatic, lush coffees brought in daily and freshly ground, coffees from around the world. From Ethiopia, Yrgacheffe; from Costa Rica, Tarrazu; from China, Yunnan-Megnlian Yirong. A rarity, this establishment also has loose teas.
- Mugshots Coffee Company, located at 10518 France Avenue South in Bloomington, reminds Minnesotans that "your mug matters." From 6:30 in the bright-and-early morning until 9 at night, this cozy spot welcomes you with an expansive list of hot beverages (coffee, espresso, macchiato, teas), cold drinks (smoothies, iced coffees, and teas) and hearty sandwiches with soup.
- The Grind, at 8170 26th Avenue South in Bloomington, gets beyond the cute name to offer delicious blueberry scones, freshly made donuts, and plenty of piping hot coffee. Be forewarned: the Everhart family (they run the place) have a thing for the King, by which we mean Elvis. Breakfast and brew from this place will brace you for a great day of home tours and neighborhood navigating as you look out for your perfect home in Bloomington.
- Vicinity Coffee is not just in the vicinity of 3350 Lyndale Avenue South, it is at that exact spot in Minneapolis, where it caters to early risers with a 6 a.m. opening. In business since 2011, Vicinity has an adjacent wine bar, so this shop is satisfying to lovers of the bean or lovers of the grape.
- West Side Perk at 7700 W Old Shakopee Road in Bloomington has hot drinks, other hot drinks, and cold drinks. That would be coffees (seven varieties); teas and cider (six choices); and smoothies and such (iced coffees and teas, Dreamsicles). But, true to their motto, "No skimping whatsoever," they also have soups and sandwiches, bagels, scones, and even apple fritters.
- Workhorse Coffee Bar, at 2399 University Avenue in Saint Paul, is in a great neighborhood for buyers intent on finding comfortable, affordable homes. Workhorse features vegan and non-vegan bread, locally roasted coffees, and fresh new artwork from local talent.
