Autumn foliage is one of the most beautiful things about the changing of the seasons, and it's even better if you can watch it happen in all its magnificent splendor – out in the beauty of nature.
With almost 14,000 total acres of floodplain forest, wetlands, and prairie featuring iconic tall grass, the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge offers self-guided tours around some of the most amazing natural wonders found in Minnesota.
The most common way to experience it, however, is by ambling around the dozens of hiking trails. They are among the most popular for both hikers and trail runners state-wide, attracting a bevy of visitors each year since the land opened to the public in 1976.
The big options here:
- Bass Ponds Loop: An educational half-mile journey beloved by kids and their teachers.
- Hogback Ridge Trail: An exciting journey across flat river bottom forests and meadows.
If you want to observe brilliant foliage, you might as well go bird-spotting, too! You won't be disappointed: On the Hogback Ridge Trail alone, you can glimpse 25 species of warblers along the path. They're on their way to Canada and will be glad to serenade you during the trip.
If you want to get an even closer view of bird species, then the Long Meadow Lake Unit is the place to go. Although the Unit is only a very short distance from the world-famous Mall of America, the contrast between the two could not be more extreme.
You won't even know the popular attraction is just around the corner as you explore nine miles of trails that have been carefully preserved to minimize natural impact. On the way, you'll find more of the region's river bottom forest as well as blooming meadows and steep bluffs.
Although Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge is the hands-down favorite for many locals, there are many other options around. The Minnesota River Valley alone is home to a collection of seven distinct refuges that all have something to offer.
That gives you outdoor opportunities for years to come!
