Bemidji MN Fishing
Lake Bemidji is one of the best fishing destinations around – here in its native Northern Minnesota or anywhere else you care to name. Homes in Bemidji are just minutes from this natural wonder. Counselor Realty agents have helped out many experienced anglers moving to the area!

Of course, there's always room for more. Could you be next?

Lake Bemidji: Steeped in History and Unique in the Present

The 13,000-resident city of Bemidji sits comfortably on the southwestern shore of Lake Bemidji. Its auspicious location has given it the nickname "First City on the Mississippi." It's also the closest place to stock up on bait, tackle, and gear for an enjoyable day of Lake Bemidji fishing.

Lake Bemidji has been settled (and fished!) for more than 250 years. The native Ojibwe people of the region called the Lake of Crossing Waters because the mighty Mississippi enters on the southern side of the lake and exits on its eastern side.

In the frontier days, Lake Bemidji became legendary as one of the many American landmarks believed to be created by the gigantic woodsman Paul Bunyan. According to legend, Paul made Lake Bemidji in his footsteps as he strode across the great United States.

Lake Bemidji is a Treasure You Can Enjoy All Year Around

The unique traits of Lake Bemidji – both its depth and its status as a sort of "crossroads" of the Mississippi River – contribute to its unique traits as a fishing destination. For one thing, it covers 6,000 acres, so there's always a spot somewhere where the fish are biting!

Another interesting aspect of the Bemidji experience: The lake is bordered by Bemidji State University and Bemidji State Park as well as the city of Bemidji itself. That means there are plenty of places to set up. The lake's structures hold fish all year around.

And here's the big question ... what types of fish can you expect to see here?

There are all kinds of game fish to find throughout Lake Bemidji, with each of the lake's two basins offering its own assortment of sweet spots. You can match wits with yellow perch, extra-large muskie, and – especially in the fall – big northern pike. Walleye flourish in the spring, too.

During the winter, dedicated fisherfolk will find a whole different challenge as the pressure ridge in the ice along Diamond Point Bar mixes things up. This ridge isn't always navigable, and that often means you'll choose an access point based on your preferred basin.

Naturally, no matter whether you use high-tech sonar seekers or just plain old worms on a hook, you'll find professional-grade outfitters and plenty of seasoned lakeside warriors to swap big fish stories with. Locals and tourists alike love to flock to the shores of Bemidji, particularly in summer.
