Lake Bemidji: Steeped in History and Unique in the Present
The 13,000-resident city of Bemidji sits comfortably on the southwestern shore of Lake Bemidji. Its auspicious location has given it the nickname "First City on the Mississippi." It's also the closest place to stock up on bait, tackle, and gear for an enjoyable day of Lake Bemidji fishing.
Lake Bemidji has been settled (and fished!) for more than 250 years. The native Ojibwe people of the region called the Lake of Crossing Waters because the mighty Mississippi enters on the southern side of the lake and exits on its eastern side.

There are all kinds of game fish to find throughout Lake Bemidji, with each of the lake's two basins offering its own assortment of sweet spots. You can match wits with yellow perch, extra-large muskie, and – especially in the fall – big northern pike. Walleye flourish in the spring, too.
During the winter, dedicated fisherfolk will find a whole different challenge as the pressure ridge in the ice along Diamond Point Bar mixes things up. This ridge isn't always navigable, and that often means you'll choose an access point based on your preferred basin.
