Rochester MN Millennials
As the economy improves, more homes in Rochester have been going to upwardly mobile Millennial buyers.

Millennials have not always had an easy time. Many found their career and life plans set back by the Great Recession. Limited financial means forced millions of them to move back in with parents and delay decisions on starting a family.

Nowadays, it's becoming easier to make those big investments.

As the situation (finally) shifts in Millennials' favor, they aren't shy about moving to where the action is. Several communities, from bustling cities to welcoming small towns, are showing up on Millennials' new map of the world – and one of them is Rochester.

Rochester Features Employment, Amenities, and More for Millennials

The Twin Cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis have gotten a lot of attention from Millennials, of course, but Rochester is popular among those who are looking for a little something different.

Here's just a brief selection of what it has to offer:

  • Dining and Nightlife
Rochester's culture is Millennial-friendly and inspired by all the latest trends. In the morning, you'll find brisk, locavore-focused coffee and tea at Klutzsky Market. In the evening, you can visit The Doggery – a Prohibition-era speakeasy – for quality cocktails.

  • Outdoors and Wildlife
Like the larger cities in the area, Rochester is known for maintaining plenty of open spaces to explore. Millennials interested in keeping fit and enjoying the great outdoors are sure to like the 12.5-mile Douglas Trail, a centerpiece of state conservation efforts.

  • Healthcare
If you're concerned about long-term quality of life, Rochester has plenty in store. It's home to the Mayo Clinic, one of a handful of world-class healthcare institutions that truly set the pace for the rest. The clinic is one of the region's top employers, with nearly 63,000 staff overall.

The Mayo Clinic is in the early stages of building the new Destination Medical Center, which has been in the planning phases since 2013. Once it's operational, it could add as many as 40,000 new jobs. It's also expected to attract an influx of new residents and even enhance tourism.

  • Employment
While the Mayo Clinic is a great opportunity for those with a wide range of career goals, it's not the only game in town. Rochester's easy commute puts a whole slew of top-notch companies within easy reach. Some of the leading employers include Wegmans, Xerox, and Paychex.

While Rochester's economy was traditionally based on printing and film, it has transformed toward tech in recent years. As Eastman Kodak receded as a major player, supermarkets, and higher education have moved in to fill the gap.

  • Education
It's never too late to learn – in fact, life-long learning will prove key to the careers of Millennials in high-tech industries. The University of Rochester boasts nearly 30,000 employees and a total enrollment over 12,000. It is a highly selective private school.

And if you're thinking about a master's or professional degree, it is the place to be.

Originally founded 1850, the University of Rochester has had a very long time to become a mainstay in the community. It stands apart as one of the most productive research universities in the U.S.: It received more than $350 million in federal research funding in 2016.
