Saint Paul Cinco de MayoFinding the perfect Saint Paul home to put an offer on is a cause for celebration as our clients know well. When you live in the Twin Cities, though, there's always something to celebrate. This time of year, the biggest one is Cinco de Mayo!

Cinco de Mayo Celebration in Saint Paul is One of the Nation's Biggest

Cinco de Mayo celebrates the 1862 defeat of French forces by a defending Mexican army aiming to secure the country's independence from Napoleon III. The battle marked a major turning point in the fate of the region, setting up the eventual French retreat in 1866.

Cinco de Mayo marked a seminal victory in Mexican history against an opposing force that held many advantages. It is still celebrated today as a prelude to the modern Mexican state and holds a status very similar to the Fourth of July.

It's much better known than Mexico's Independence Day, which is observed in September!

Saint Paul Cinco de Mayo Parade

St. Paul's annual Cinco de Mayo celebration takes place on the West Side along Cesar Chavez Street, named for the labor leader and civil rights activist whose work had a profound impact on the Latino community. Every year, the street is the center of an all-day celebration!

St. Paul Cinco de Mayo is separated into several different activity areas:

  • Community Village
This area celebrates local arts, crafts, and produce. All participants come right from St. Paul West Side. Jewelry, t-shirts, produce, and much more will be ready for buyers at a traditional la placita-style open air marketplace.

  • Family Zone
Stop by here for fun-filled interactive educational opportunities the kids will love. There'll be free face painting and exhibits from the Science Museum of Minnesota, The Riverview Library, Girl Scouts, and many others.

  • Car, Truck, and Bike Show
It's free for spectators. There'll be sixteen different categories including fan favorites like the hot rods, motorcycles, full-size and mini trucks, most unique wheels – and of course, the low rider. It's not too late to register to participate!

Saint Paul Cinco de Mayo Parade
  • Parade
The parade is the centerpiece of the whole holiday! It starts promptly at 10 AM and includes awards such as the Heritage Award, Most Spirited, and Judges Choice. Colorful costumes, dances, and decorations will be on full display!

  • History Zone
The History and Photo Zone will showcase information about West Side St. Paul and the past Cinco de Mayo festivals that have graced the city. There'll be a family coloring activity available as well as special setups to take a keepsake photo.

  • Demonstration Stage
At the Demonstration Stage, you'll have the opportunity to see some of the most striking parts of Mexican tradition up close. That includes wonderful hair and makeup styling and an eating competition sponsored by top local restaurants. This is the place for food and drink!

With all this and plenty of live entertainment, you just can't miss it!

The annual Cinco de Mayo bash is just one of the many great traditions that give Saint Paul a unique feel all its own. It's truly a place where you can see the best of the American "melting pot" and enjoy taking part in culture as it comes alive – not just in May, but all year around.

A personalized experience will help you select a wonderful home, make your offer, and get to closing the easy way.
